Things were over pretty early for the Douglas wrestling team at the Nevada 4A state championships over the weekend.
Each of the six wrestlers the Tigers sent suffered a loss in the first two round, but three fought their way through the consolation brackets to claim fourth-place finishes.
Seniors Ryan Pruitt and Sean Molina each finished with a fourth-place finish, as did 112-pounder Garrett Hekhuis.
Hekhuis pinned Foothill’s Joel Olivas in the first round, but dropped a 6-0 decision to Mojave’s Jake Evans 6-0.
He beat Coronado’s Mark Rillera 6-0 and pinned Las Vegas’ Hugo Carrillo in 2:41 to advance to the consolation final before taking a tough 2-1 loss to Carson’s Owen Craugh.
Damonte Ranch’s Jordan O’Neal went on to win the state championship in that class.
At 152 pounds, Pruitt beat Green Valley’s Bobby Burns 4-3 in the first round. Eventual state champion Kyle Barrett handed Pruitt a 5-3 loss in the quarterfinals.
He turned around in the consolation bracket and pinned Louis Russo of Sage Ridge in 1:53.
Mojave’s David Jordan took an 11-7 victory in the consolation finals.
Molina, who was coming off a regional title in the 189-pound bracket, pinned Durango’s Rafael Penha to open things up, but lost to Las Vegas’ Zach Williams 2:42 in the second.
Molina pinned Reno’s Scott Gettings in 1:44 and then lost to Basic’s Garrett Muro 13-5 in the consolation finals.
Devin Barker (140), Jake Williams (160) and Tony Ferris (171) each lost their first two matches of the tournament.
Douglas finished 10th overall in the state standings, with Mojave claiming the state title.
Cimarron-Memorial (2nd place), Las Vegas, Damonte Ranch, Fallon, Green Valley, Carson, Galen and Palo Verde rounded out the rest of the top 10 in order.
