Elias Armendariz, Pahrump Valley's 112-pound wrestler advanced his 2006-2007 record to 40-3 by winning two matches Wednesday in Southern Nevada Class 3-A League duals against Boulder City and Las Vegas Faith Lutheran.
With an enthusiastic crowd cheering their every move, Pahrump Valley wrestlers came from behind to edge visiting Boulder City 42-34, then overpowered Las Vegas Faith Lutheran 72-12, in Southern Nevada Class 3-A League dual matches Wednesday.
The sweep moved the Craig Rieger-coached Trojans to 6-0 in the league and clinched at least a tie for a third consecutive dual-meet title.
The Trojans wrestle at Overton Moapa Valley Wednesday, with the homestanding Pirates, 1-5, and Faith Lutheran, 0-6, their opposition, starting at 3 p.m.
In all duals, the Trojans are 28-8.
A win against either team will secure the title. Mesquite Virgin Valley, 6-2, and Boulder City, 4-4, have completed their league schedules. All of the Southern teams will be at Faith Lutheran Feb. 3 for the 3-A regionals. The state tournament is Feb. 9-10 at Spanish Springs High School in Reno.
The Trojans trailed Boulder City 22-15 after six matches, but one of their pivotal wins came when Ande Floyd won by pin in 1:29 in the 145-pound match.
Jeremiah Ward, 152, won by decision and the Trojans led, 24-22. Pahrump Valley lost the next two matches to fall behind, 34-24, but that merely set the stage for the Trojans' heavyweights.
Each won by first-round pins to power the Trojans to victory.
Zach Weldon, 189, won in 0:36; Pierce Henckle, 215, prevailed in 1:04, and Frank Lopez, 275, won by fall in 1:47.
Elias Armendariz, 112; Jordan Booth, 119, and James Chapman, 135, won their matches against the Eagles.
The Trojans lost one match (103 pounds) by forfeit and another by pin (145), but swept the other 12, either by pins or forfeits, in the Faith Lutheran dual.
Armendariz moved to 40-3 on the season with a pin in 2:35. Booth, 21-7, won by pin in 1:06.
Mike Evans, 125, pinned his rival in 3:27; Steven Fildes, 130, prevailed in 0:42; Chapman and Floyd won by forfeits, as did Ward and Henckel.
Lopez, 37-4, won by fall in 1:59; Weldon, 36-5, pinned his rival in 1:14, and Joey Colucci, 171, won by fall in 2:42. Kody Daffer, 160, won in 0:37.
