The Spanish Springs Cougars had no trouble handing High Desert League rivals Reed and Elko dual match defeats Wednesday night.
The Cougars dumped Elko 54-22 and later in the evening buried Reed 58-19. Elko got by Reed 42-36 in Wednesday’s other dual.
“This was a nice way to wrap up our dual season. I’m pretty happy with the outcome,” Spanish Springs coach Joe Imelli said. “I expected us to get the job done and the kids went out and responded.”
Spanish Springs (10-6, 4-2 HDL) won 10 of 14 matches in its dual against Elko. Todd Pearson (103 pounds), Taylor Freshman (130), Brandon Waters (152), James Gardner (189), Billy Dean (215) and Clint Robison (285) all beat Elko opponents by way of pin.
Spanish Springs also got six team points when its 171-pound wrestler, Kevin Shaffer, collected a forfeit victory.
A trio of Spanish Springs wrestlers won in a decision. In the 125-pound match, Jared Brusby captured a 14-5 win. At 135 pounds, Eli Coleman won 13-2 and at 160 pounds, Chris White won 17-7.
The Cougars captured wins in 10 of the 14 matches in its dual triumph over Reed as well.
Pearson, Brusby, Waters, White and Robison all got forfeit wins against the Raiders.
Beau Lebarr (112), Brady Flinchem (145), Gardner and Dean all pinned their Raider opponents.
Coleman posted a 15-4 win for the Cougars in the 135 pound match.
“I’ve told the kids all season that we’ve worked toward regionals and now we’ve got just one more tune-up,” Imelli said.
Both Spanish Springs and Reed will compete at the Placer, Calif. tournament this weekend.
The four Reed wrestlers to beat a Spanish Springs wrestler did not go unrecognized. Tyler Mollenburg won for Reed at 119 pounds with a 13-2 victory. Vic Taylor put up an 11-7 win in the 140-pound match for the RHS crew.
Mitchell Payne (130) and Brandon Gebhardt (171) both won by pin for Reed.
Reed almost pulled off the upset against Elko. Despite forfeiting five matches, the Raiders fell by just six points, 42-36. The dual was tied at 36-36 until Reed could not suit up a wrestler in the final match, 152 pounds.
Reed won seven of the nine matches decided on the mat against Elko, but could not overcome the free points it gave away.
Trevor Burns, Ziad Rashdon, Derek Ratto, Taylor and Payne all pinned their Elko opponent.
Chris Leyva collected a 9-7 win for Reed in the 112-pound match and Gebhardt won by forfeit, accounting for the Raiders other two wins.
