One of the top wrestling teams in Northern Nevada visited South Tahoe High on Wednesday night and the Vikings were up to the task.
South Tahoe built a 27-21 lead over Carson - ranked fourth in the latest Sierra Nevada Media Group poll - with five matches remaining before the Senators rallied for a hard-fought 45-33 victory.
"I'm real proud of the kids. They hung right with them," said STHS coach Ken Robbins. "I think we surprised them a little bit with how well we wrestled."
The Senators recovered by posting four straight pins before Viking 145-pounder Elliot Pekar closed out the match with a second-period pin.
South Tahoe built their six-point lead late in the match despite forfeiting two weight classes. In the 12 actual matches, the Vikings and Senators each won six.
"Historically, we've never fared well against them," Robbins said. "They are kind of the measuring stick for consistency. They had a full team and being within a one-match swing of them, that is a testament to how hard the kids have started to work."
Miles Wallace improved his season record to 24-3 with a 10-3 decision at 189 pounds.
The remainder of STHS's points were scored off pins. Sophomore Chris Ewing registered a first-period fall at 215 pounds, sophomore Jon f*go't overcame a 50-pound disadvantage to earn a first-period pin, freshman Tyler Slater (103) remained undefeated (5-0) in league matches with a fall after taking a 6-5 lead into the final period and sophomore Myles Lopez scored a pair of first-period takedowns before finishing off his foe with a pin.
The Vikings (2-3 in Sierra Division duals), close out their league season with matches against North Valleys on Jan. 20 and Hug on Jan. 24. The latter date is the Vikings' final home match.
South Tahoe will step outside the region on Saturday when it travels to the Lincoln Invitational near Sacramento.
Carson wrestling beats South Tahoe
Still not at full strength, the Carson High wrestling team got some clutch performances from some unexpected wrestlers in a 45-33 win at South Tahoe on Wednesday.
"We bounced around some kids," Carson coach Tyson Thivierge said. "We're still fighting some injuries and illness."
Todd Banko (125 pounds), Robbie Bozin (130), Adam Carmazzi (135), Aaron Jolcover (140) and Travis Lamborn (160) all won by pin for Carson. Martin Azzam (152) also won 8-1 and Owen Craugh (112) and Matt Heath (171) won by forfeit.
Carmazzi and Jolcover were among those who came through in the clutch for the Senators. Jolcover's win clinced the match for Carson, giving the Senators a 45-27 lead.
"He knew the situation we were in," Thivierge said. "He did what he needed to do for the team. Aaron really took the wind out of their sails."
About Carmazzi, Thivierge said, "this is the most aggressive I've seen him wrestle all year."
The match also marked the return of Banko, who wrestled for the first time since suffering an elbow injury last month at the Las Vegas Tournament. Banko won by pin in about 30 seconds.
"He looked pretty solid," Thivierge said. "it was a fairly quick pin. He looked hungry and he he looked pretty fresh. That was good to see."
Among the wrestlers Carson was still without was Kyle Banko, who's out with an infection. Thivierge said he doesn't know if Banko will be able to wrestle on Saturday in the Rosemont Invitational in Sacramento, but hopes to have him back for this Wednesday's showdown against Fallon at CHS.
"We've got our fingers crossed that we're at full strength," said Thivierge about the Fallon match. "I really think we're starting to peak at the right time."
