Giving up four weight classes is never a good formula for success in the 4A Sierra League. The South Tahoe wrestling team found that out the hard way on Wednesday in a 57-15 loss to Douglas in Minden.
Of the nine matches the Vikings contested, they won four of them, including wins by Tyler Slater, Elliot Pekar, Miles Wallace and Jon f*go't.
"The score looks kind of bad, but we are happy with the matches we did wrestle in," said STHS coach Ken Robbins. "The ones we did wrestle were very close, and this gives us a lot of momentum going into the second half of our season."
South Tahoe drops to 1-3 in league duals and has matches left against Hug, North Valleys and Carson. Slater (103 pounds) ran his season record to 16-4 after posting a 5-4 decision with a takedown at the end of the third period.
At 152 pounds, Pekar shutout his opponent 7-0 and improved to 14-4, while Miles Wallace is now a team-best 15-3 on the season following a 4-2 win against the Tigers in the 189-pound weight class.
Slater took sixth last weekend at the Lowry Invitational, which included the top teams from Idaho, Oregon, Utah and Nevada. Pekar placed fourth and Wallace second after a 5-4 loss to Douglas' Sean Molina in the tournament finals. (Molina wrestled at 215 pounds on Tuesday night.)
Jon f*go't, who recorded the only pin of the night for the Vikings against the Tigers, nearly earned a medal at the Lowry Invitational, where South Tahoe placed 10th out of 29 teams. The Vikings don't wrestle again until Dec. 30 when they compete in the Dayton Invitational.
"We've wrestled 20 times already this year, and the kids' bodies are feeling like they've already wrestled 20 times," Robbins said. "So we're going to take some time and relax around the Christmas tree, then get after it again before the New Year."
