After starting the Sierra League season with two dual losses, the South Tahoe wrestling team recorded its first win in style by pulling away from Wooster in a 49-25 win on Wednesday at South Tahoe High School. Tied at 25, the Vikings won their next four matches by pins and cruised to a 24-point victory.
"I've always said that duals really aren't what wrestling is about," said STHS coach Ken Robbins. "But even though it's an individual sport, it's nice to win one in our gym and to pull for each other like a team."
Tyler Slater (103 pounds), Paul Hubbell (135), Jake Fonken (145), Miles Wallace (189), Chris Ewing (215) and Jon f*go't (heavyweight) all recorded pins in their matches. Slater and Wallace improved their season records to 11-1.
"We finally feel like we're gelling right now," said Wallace, one of several state tournament hopefuls for the Vikings. "We try to be nice on the mat, but we need to get meaner on the mat and really get after it."
The most entertaining match of night was courtesy of the Vikings' Anthony Barton and the Colts' Ben Underhill. A two-time state tournament qualifier, Underhill has beaten current STHS stars Wallace and Elliot Pekar in various weight classes the past two seasons in the regional tournament.
But he encountered a fierce challenge from Barton, who has wrestled well all season but has also suffered several heartbreaking losses. That all ended on Wednesday when the senior earned two points late in the third period to tie the match at 8, then captured the first points of overtime to pull out a 10-8 victory.
"That was the match of the night," Robbins said. "He really showed some courage to shoot it at the end, then shoot it again in overtime because sometimes it's easier to hang back in sudden death. I hope this is what turns his season around because he's been close all season."
Lee Williams (140) recorded a 10-2 victory in his match, while Myles Lopez was credited with a forfeit victory at 119 pounds. The Vikings (1-2 league) wrestle in the Lowry Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
