Freshman Tyler Slater continued his dominance in Northern Nevada by recording yet another first-period pin, but the South Tahoe wrestling team suffered a 46-28 defeat to Reno in its Sierra League home opener on Wednesday at STHS.
Slater, who wrestles at 103 pounds and has five first-period pins in his past six matches, improved his season record to 7-1, while Elliot Pekar and Miles Wallace each improved to 6-1 following pins in their matches. South Tahoe (3-4) gave up three weight classes due to holes in its lineup.
"Tyler is off to a great start as a freshman, and hopefully he can continue it this weekend when he will get a big test," said STHS coach Ken Robbins, whose team will compete in Saturday's 16-team Fallon Invitational. "Miles and Elliot have both kind of re-established their dominance in matches. It's just unfortunate that we couldn't overcome the loss of three weight classes. We didn't wrestle up to our potential today."
Miles Lopez (119 pounds) pinned his opponent in the second period and improved his season record to 4-3. In his first wrestling action since having his appendix removed shortly before Thanksgiving, Chris Ewing (215 pounds) also recorded a pin in his season opener.
