Second-year Elko wrestling coach Kelly Wintermote knew he had an inexperienced team coming into the High Desert League's season opener at Fallon.
Elko's youthfulness showed against the defending HDL and Northern 4A Region champs as the Greenwave took a 66-18 victory Wednesday night. The Wave's next league match is Wednesday at Manogue.
"Pin or be pinned," said Wintermote in describing the evening.
Every bout was decided by pinfall as the Wave won its 32nd consecutive HDL match.
"We have a young team. Most of our guys are out for their first or second year," he said.
Fallon coach Mitch Overlie said earlier this week he did not know what to expect from his team. After the graduation of four seniors and the return of many juniors, Overlie said the season's first match would be a test.
Trent de Braga resumed his winning ways with a pin against Danny Ruiz.
"We're very inexperienced with varsity experience," Overlie. "But our wrestlers came out after them and smelled blood. They tore after them."
Overlie said Elko showed great promise.
"The coaching staff will get them ready. Their wrestlers will get better," Overlie said.
Fallon's Sam Anderson, who pinned Elko's James Allen in the final bout at 119 pounds, said experience made a difference.
"Our techniques are what got them," Anderson said.
Even for the first match of the season, Anderson said he was not surprised every match was settled by a pin.
"We had goals," he said. "We could not allow them more than 18 points, and we had to score in the upper 50s or low 60s," Anderson added.
Fallon's Sam Anderson took care of business, eventually pinning James Allen.
Elko won two bouts and picked up six more points on a Fallon forfeit at 125 pounds. Josh Garvin pinned Fallon's Josh Gregory in the third round at 112 pounds after taking a 10-1 lead. The Elko sophomore chose a neutral position to begin the third period, and once he recorded a takedown, he moved across Gregory's torso and pinned him.
"I think I did pretty well, but there are a few things I need to work on," said Garvin, a state qualifier last season.
Garvin said Elko's inexperience showed against Fallon, but he said the Tribe will improve.
"By the end of the season, we should have a pretty good team," he said.
Garvin said it was rough to open with Fallon, but the team match should give the other wrestlers an idea of what they need to do.
After Elko took a 6-0 lead on a forfeit, Fallon's Cody Kappahn pinned Mikel Holmes in 28 seconds of their 130-pound match. The Tribe regained the lead when Ken McCullough pinned Russell Wilhem before the end of the first period.
Trent de Braga, who finished third at state in February, built an 11-1 lead against Danny Ruiz. With 1:10 left in the second period, de Braga scored a reverse and then stretched Ruiz out for the pin at 135 pounds.
Anthony Woller fell behind Elko's Neal Shea 5-0 in their 145-pound bout. Shea cradled the Fallon junior near the edge of the outer circle, but Woller kicked his way out of Shea's grip. Woller reversed Shea's hold and pinned him with eight second remaining in first period.
Fallon's Tyler Reibsamen (152) pinned Daniel Dana, and Greg Heck, making his varsity debut at 160 pounds, scored a pin 58 seconds into his bout against Zach Stetler. Elko forfeited at 171.
Greenwave grapplers John Swanson, Clint Riggins and Lyle Gardner each had first-period pins.
Swanson recorded a win against Garret Garfield at 189, while Riggins built a 3-2 lead against Jeff Elmore before pinning him
Gardner and Elko's Trevor Arthur renewed their rivalry, but the Fallon senior picked up his 50th straight win with 45 seconds left in the first period.
Fred Wheeler gave Fallon a win at 103 pounds when he pinned Jake Nutting.
Junior varsity
Holt Bogdanowicz pinned his opponent.
Bret Carey lost by a 10-4 decision and pinned another opponent.
Zack Hicks recorded a second-round pin.
Josh Gregory picked up a 10-6 decision for his first win.
Cory Sage broke a 10-10 tie in the third period to take a 14-10 decision.
Zarek Sanchez pinned his opponent in the first round.
Matt Quist defeated his opponent by pinfall.
Fletcher Bowman had a first-round pin, and Colin Merkley won a 103-pound exhibition match.
Greenwave notes
Fallon's varsity team will compete in Saturday's Capital City Classic at Carson City. Overlie said the host Senators may be the team to beat in the Sierra League this season. Carson defeated Douglas, 50-18, Wednesday.
The "B" team heads to Yerington on Saturday.
