Martin Taylor established himself as one of the top wrestlers in the Northern 4A last season. He took fourth in the zone tournament in the 189-pound weight class and missed qualifying for state by one place.
Damonte Ranch's Brandon Frownfelter had different ideas going into Wednesday's dual at South Tahoe High School.
Frownfelter put up a major challenge, but Taylor responded with a good bit of technique to pull out an 8-7 victory and help the Vikings beat the Mustangs 39-32 in the Sierra Division opener for both teams.
"In the past, I have always relied on my strength," said Taylor, who has shed 10 pounds since football season to make weight for wrestling. "But I wasn't able to use just my strength. I still found a way to turn that guy."
Of the 14 matches, there were six forfeits and only two matches weren't decided by pins. South Tahoe's Mike Crouse (119 pounds) and Lee Williams (135) pinned their opponents.
Williams, who was sick most of the week, pinned Damonte Ranch's Justin Holmes about a minute into the first period. The Vikings' Ismael Mora (130), Garrett Gibb (145), Brandon Johns (152) and Miles Wallace (171) all won by forfeit.
