Elko wrestling coach Kelly Wintermote perfectly summed up Wednesday's 49-24 loss to Fallon in both team's season opener.
“Considering we spotted them 30 points, we didn't do too bad,” he said.
The Indians forfeited in five weight classes which gave the Greenwave 30 points to start with.
The dual got rolling with the heavyweights, but it was not the way the Tribe's Trevor Arthur wanted to start the year. Fallon's Lyle Gardner started the match with a quick takedown and kept Arthur on the bottom for most of the first period. Gardner eventually went on to record a 10-0 major decision.
In the 103-pound division, Elko's Spencer Garvin and Fallon's Sam Anderson went back and forth for the full six minutes for one of the night's most exciting matches.
Anderson recorded a takedown, but Garvin reacted and pulled off a reverse. Both wrestlers recorded three-point near falls in the opening period. Garvin recorded a reverse to start the third period and tie the score at 14-all. But Anderson came back with five unanswered and held on for a 19-14 decision.
Elko's Jacob Nutting took the 112 division by forfeit, but wrestled in an exhibition. The 85-pound freshman posted an impressive 9-4 win.
“Both of my lightweights were impressive,” Wintermote said. “Jacob showed a lot of heart in the exhibition match. He has the heart of a grizzly bear.”
Fallon's Trent DeBraga won the 119 weight class by forfeit to put his team up 13-6.
The Tribe's Tom Barrington scored a huge 9-7 win over Brandon Lacow in his first match at 125 pounds.
Elko seniors Mitchell Schroeder (130 pounds) and T.J. Jordan (135) each pinned their Greenwave opponents. Schroeder did in Mark Thomas at the 3:45 mark, and Jordan took care of Anthony Woller just 1:20 into the match.
The Indians' Chris Reilly posted an 11-6 win over Jace Reibsamen. Reilly scored a reverse and a near fall to take an 11-3 lead halfway through the third period. The win gave the Tribe a 24-13 lead, but the forfeits started to kick in as Fallon wrestlers Jace Angus (145), Tanner Jones (152), Reilly Orozco (189) and Ryan Seley (215) each posted victories because Elko didn't have an opponent for them to wrestle.
At 160, the Greenwave's James Stubbs pinned Chad Lindsey in the first period, and Stubbs' teammate Tyler Diaz fell Todd Wellington in the third period of the 171-pound match.
“We just have to tune some things up,” Wintermote said. “If we fix some things, we will be all right.”
Wintermote is also optimistic about filling some of those forfeited divisions. He has prospective fill-ins at 119, 152 and 215.
Elko and Fallon will meet again this weekend at the Fallon Invitational.
