Northern Nevada 4A wrestling better beware of the freight train gaining momentum in South Lake Tahoe.
The South Tahoe High Vikings are on the fast track to more success entering the upcoming regional tournament. South Tahoe won its second straight dual, winning at North Valleys 39-28 on Saturday.
"North Valleys was a real strong team and it was their senior day, but our kids wrestled really well," said STHS coach Ken Robbins.
South Tahoe finished the dual season at 3-3, using a couple of late pins by heavyweight Cody Reeder and 103-pounder Mike Crouse to rally for the victory. The Vikings trailed 27-22 before the back-to-back falls changed the outcome.
Miles Wallace capped a perfect dual season, running his record to 6-0 with a fall at 160 pounds.
"What he's done is unbelievable, especially for a sophomore to accomplish that in this league," Robbins said.
Nate Sweeney provided STHS win its fourth pin of the day, winning by fall at 171 pounds. Earning decisions were Lee Williams, 119, 6-3 victory; Derek Simon, 125, won 11-8; Elliot Pekar, 140, 10-5 winner; and Martin Taylor, 189, 12-8 victor.
Junior Buck Pershing and freshman Sonam Sherpa notched exhibition wins. Pershing, wrestling for the first time, pinned his foe in 1 minute, 50 seconds, while Sherpa won by fall at 145 pounds.
The Vikings have nearly two weeks to prepare for the Feb. 4-5 regional tournament.
"We're going down there with every intention of winning the thing," Robbins said. "Our goal was to be in the top three, but we've set our sights a little higher than that now."
